The TFP Revolution has started its Time For Pay
Founded By Daniel Bunce 2020
Are you currently providing your time or working as a photographer, videographer, make-up artist, model, actor, and other types of creative artists?
Do you realize that together we are the creative industry? This is a bold statement but I can make it because it’s true. The Decisions we make affect everything including the potential for improving our income while working in the creative industry.
How many people study at university pay a lot of money for fees in education to hopefully land a job in the industry two or three years later to finally get to that point and discover that there very few are paid jobs and it’s extremely difficult to earn money working as a creative.
We also know there are people providing their services who have no qualifications, no formal training, and offer their time for free. In today’s social systems this seems to be an acceptable way for people to accomplish their tasks. They use people’s free time and generosity.
People helping other people for free is not the problem, this problem is educating those who are doing this by explaining to them they do have the possibility to earn money. The other aspect is to educate people with limited experience and lack of self-confidence that their time has some value.
“So if this is our industry, where are we going with it?”

“So if this is our industry, where are we going with it?”
“Will we have a future way to earn money in our industry?”
Does it really matter about the level of our experience, does that mean you shouldn’t be paid because you’re just new at what you’re doing? I believe we should be educating everybody at every level to charge for their time. This is a key fundamental to protecting the individual and improving the industry by driving the economy. Even if the person doing th work has very limited experience they still entitled to earn some monetary value for their time this is simply something that can be negotiated, I think somebody’s time has value and nobody should work for free the last time I heard of that was when people had slaves and I believe slavery is illegal these days.
Have you ever thought to yourself if we don’t start to do something about protecting our future from potential destruction due to obvious problems of the creative industry that in the future we may be struggling even harder to make a living.
Today we’re all aware of the exchange for services and time generally referred to as TFP (Time for Prints) my understanding of TFP is it should be an arrangement directly between two people that want to exchange a service with each other for personal use technically there is not meant to be a commercial aspect to this exchange.
When people give their time in exchange for a photograph or our photographic experience in exchange for a model’s time we generally use this to build experience or create content to post work on a creative idea in turn to promote ourselves on social media for the purpose to show our skill and find others that take interest in our style. Maybe we want to work with others so we try to show what we can do but how long will you continue to work TFP?
Even with the exchange of free time there’s still a cost involved to both parties. This cost might include materials, travel equipment, simple things like food to eat during the process and the fact that you’re not working in a job receiving an income as you’re spending time working for free. This is overlooked as a real cost or investment as both or one of the parties from the tfp will have some level of financial cost related to the free process. If a photographer actually provided prints instead of digital files there would be a cost relating to printing there’s also a cost relating to post production and editing if done and considering involving other people like a make-up artist the process of creating this collaboration incurs personal cost to each person involved.
I also question what is the purpose of this image being created, why was it created and what exactly is the plan for this outcome so what’s the advantage from doing this task.
In most cases there is little advantage for either as it is all for free and fun if technically can not be used for commercial purposes, it may create opportunity to gain experience, it may create opportunity to showcase somebody’s work at their current level of experience, however I believe if you start working for free to build your folio in a TFP environment you will possibly become stuck in the TFP cycle.
There’s actually nothing wrong with doing TFP. We could agree it has its place in the creative space and it’s a very important part of our industry’s process of development. The major issue is that it’s being manipulated by people that use TFP as leverage. We see this on a daily basis in forums, posts and other systems where somebody takes advantage of the TFP by engaging others to create groups and activities such as something called a collaboration which is meant to benefit everybody by getting together.
Most of the people engage in these collaborations with amateurs working from home or hobbyists that just do this for a leisurely activity. This is not a direct impact on a professional providing commercial services as a professional as you would find your own market and clients and place yourself in a position where you generate your own revenue. You can reasonably work in the industry at a price point suitable for your skillset or the service that you want to sell.
Where the TFP and collaboration starts to impact our industry is when collaboration takes advantage organising with small or medium businesses to connect and they use the results from the collaborations to promote themselves in marketing on social media and websites. Fairly easy to identify and people think this is a normal way to get business done so they take advantage of the TFP system and manipulate the people who are trying to gain experience and build folios. This means you are working for free and they do not need to engage a professional that would charge for the same thing.
People think they need to work for free because they don’t have any experience or maybe they’re skillset is just not up to scratch. I asked the question: would you work for Kentucky Fried Chicken for free, would you work for McDonald’s for free? When you start a job you normally have very limited experience but normally you’re still engaged under a paid agreement. You just get a lower rate of pay until you gain experience..
So we are all digital media content creators. Our job is to work in the creative industry creating some form of media that we use for marketing social content, the purpose of content is usually to create information for awareness used as advertising for marketing. This will be used to generate some idea or product with the purpose to make revenue.

- Engage local supply of people
- Adjust people’s mindset in our industry
- Create a system to assist with payment for time
- Join the Dots
Over the last 6 months I have engaged the support of local people to establish if this concept is feasible. I’ve had approximately 100% positive feedback and there’s an agreement that something needs to be done to help everybody.
I’ve created an engagement of local people to establish data relating to the thoughts about working for tfp and working for pay. In every case the answer is the person would like to be paid for their time.
Other questions are related my research to
- work exclusively for a studio
- work contracts
- additional training
- folio creation
- showreel creation
- roster available times to work
- location or area to work in
- participating in regular workshops
In almost all cases everybody said yes they are required this additional assistance and would consider participating in above mentioned topics.
I’m not trying to fight tfp I’m just trying to create a system that helps to adjust people’s mindsets in our industry. We should endeavor to educate and train people on how to establish themselves in the industry and work for money.
The existence of Time For Pay Revolution is to create a purpose that is designed to enforce payment for time provided the system will allow people guidance an opportunity to work without the pressure of running a business the ideal scenario is members will have a management system to support their ideas and may share a percentage of the profit from each job or pay a fee to be a member depending on the level of membership they decide to take with our system.
Time For Pay system is designed to join the dots. The business model is designed somewhere between an agency and a freelance opportunity that’s brought together as an industry body where everybody owns a small piece of this system. It’s important that people belong to something that they believe in and the system can get them guidance they can take advantage of to generate income so they can do the things they love doing and can continue staying passionate about working in the industry.
So where does the money come from?
Time to pay has created the concept of a simple system if you’re a member of our system you might undertake becoming a Professional Image Management Producer
First of all you need to become a member and subscribe to our cause, you can have a free membership however this will limit the access to the services that we are going to develop a paid membership is the step you take when you’re ready to start making money.
TRAINING 1# you may need to participate in Training and workshops, this small investment will give you the skills required to move into working in the industry as a professional being a professional only means you are charging money for your time it doesn’t determine the level of your ability.
FOLIO CREATION 2# In most cases you’re gonna require a folio created. Your portfolio will be used to showcase your skills and ability. you may become part of our greater Talent pool that showcases the amazing people we have on board and this networking process will connect people to each other for paid work.
TALENT FOR HIRE 3# Once your folio and training is complete you will become a talent for hire, Our system will generate guides to assist you in running a business and as a valuable resource you will have answers to the questions that you haven’t answered relating to your current situation. We believe the support is what people are lacking to find traction and confidence to start charging money for their services.
An example solution
A photographer pays a model a agreed rate per hour and eliminates the tfp issue
As the photographer has now paid the model he or she is the copyright owner of this images and has now created commercial content they can use to promote themselves they own the images they’ve paid for them.
The photographer May license the model to use the images with the signature Watermark in exchange for further promotion of the photographer skills or the photographer May offer the model the chance to purchase some of the images for their own use.
This entire transaction can be registered with the Time For Pay system which will ensure a history of this transaction based on your membership access. You may pay a small percentage to the system for managing your arrangement contract and financial transaction.
The advantage of the method is it eliminates unfair situations and it starts to create a small economy and generate revenue for the people who wish to be a member of the system.
There are many scenarios and services that can be established to generate revenue. The objective of the system is to provide the resources people need to run a business and automate these processes as simply as possible, giving the people time to focus on what they love doing instead of spending all of their time worrying about how to run a business.
If you imagine the entire plan is a cooperative working business with freelancers using the same resources to exchange their services and skills for money based on their level of experience we have the chance to standardize some average levels of pay billable rates for standard services.
Level of experience we have come up with the 5 tier concept for levels of experience and pay rates. The system allows people to interact at different levels of skill set and create a mentorship program to allow other people with less experience to gain more experience while working with other people.

Referring to people in your comment manner as a wally is a clear statement to your immaturity and unprofessionalism so well done.
I guess because they gave her discounts for years it’s ok to expect the same from others then ? I do not believe so . Even if it’s not your business you are engaging people for that business content creation. You both clearly misunderstand, my post is neither abuse or criticism.
This is about education and sharing the value of people’s time in our creative industry. Both of your time is important go work out if $50 will cover the real costs of this idea.
That is my actual point. It is great you are wanting to pay $50 out of your pocket but that is your own decision and budget for a task you want to do. So my point is valid and maybe to an extent so is yours when you look at it from your perspectives.
Remember you are doing work for a small business for $50 which is ok it’s your choice but you should not encourage this by saying this is a good rate for a photoshoot service. It is a mixed message.
Can you acknowledge this is not really enough and you’re actually willing to do it for a favor at your own personal expense like I said you will both lose money.
Next time have a think about it, maybe ask the business if they want a better job done and can they budget for the costs to produce the result you think is suitable. start using your energy to improve our industry by educating yourself about business and work towards building your income.
